Toto IV is carefully built pop-rock with musicians who know when to keep the playing out of the song’s way. Rosanna brings the rhythmic detail, Africa layers its hooks patiently, and I Won’t Hold You Back gives the album a softer centre.
The production is polished, but the changes in feel keep it from becoming one continuous sheen. A good choice if you enjoy close arrangements, strong melodies and a rhythm section worth listening into.
