Diamond Life gets its strength from restraint. Sade Adu’s vocal stays cool while the bass, guitar and saxophone supply a quietly persuasive groove. Smooth Operator is the familiar doorway, but Hang On to Your Love and Your Love Is King show how consistently that balance holds.
Soul, jazz and pop meet here without any one of them taking over. A fine choice when you want an album with atmosphere and proper songs underneath it.
Edition: LP.
Rolling Stone: No. 200 in the 2023 edition of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
