Back in Black wastes very little motion. Malcolm Young’s rhythm guitar and Phil Rudd’s drumming give the riffs a solid frame, leaving Angus Young and Brian Johnson room to cut through. Hells Bells makes a deliberate entrance; Shoot to Thrill is where the momentum really opens up.
The title track and You Shook Me All Night Long are the obvious draws, but the album’s strength is how firmly the whole band sits in the groove. Ten songs, very little clutter.
Edition: LP.
Rolling Stone: No. 84 in the 2023 edition of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
